Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the barrels made of?
Plastic (High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)). They are usually blue. Do not use white or light colored barrels. It allows for algae to grow in the barrels.
- What was in them before?
They had soy sauce in them.
- Where can I get plastic 55 gallon barrels?
I would recommend calling restaurant supply companies, pickle companies, soy sauce companies and any other business you can think of that might use plastic barrels.
- Can I use metal barrels?
You can but it is much more difficult to place fittings into them. I do not install/sell metal rainbarrels.
- Can you paint them?
Yes. I am trying to make the barrels more aesthetically pleasing. If you have any suggestions I am open to them.
- Should I worry about mosquitoes?
Yes, but if you keep the screen on the barrel and keep the bungs on the top closed there should be no problem.
- What is the maintenance for the barrels?
You need to clean them out at least once a year. Over time sediments fall to the bottom of the barrel and things can begin to grow in them (algae and the like). So you should empty the barrel and place some environmentally friendly cleaner in the barrel with some water and wash the barrel out.
- Is it difficult to install them myself?
Somewhat. The biggest issue is cutting the downspout at the right height and making the ground level for the barrels. I include instructions with the barrels I sell if you plan on installing them yourself.
- Is there enough pressure to use a garden hose?
I place the barrels on four cinderblocks (two high with them next to each other). This gives some additional head pressure and makes it easier to attach a garden hose.
- Is there enough pressure to use a soaker hose?
No.
- Is there enough pressure to use drip irrigation?
I have not tried it yet, but I believe there is enough pressure to do this. You would definitely need a filter before it enters into the drip system.
- Besides irrigation what other uses are there for harvested rainwater?
You should consult with your local health department or building department. If allowed in your area, harvested rainwater can be used for washing clothes, flushing toilets and if the water is filtered properly it can be used throughout the building (showers, drinking, etc?) you should have your water tested frequently if you plan on drinking the harvested rainwater.
- Where can I find more information about rainwater harvesting?
Check out the links page and the rainwater information page on this website for more information about rainwater catchment.
